Product Description

There is only one way to save Sevinpold -- untie your team of Valiants against the power to the Darkness in a fierce battle to save Sevinpold from eternal night. Proclaim victory only when you return. But be forewarned: The Darkness grows stronger and more menacing with every bolt of Dark Lightning. You will not know who triumphs until the last roll of the dice.

In this game, one player is the Darkness and every other player is a Valiant. All the Valiant players work as a team. The squire-gridded board is filled with castles, each containing a treasure. Some treasures allow the Darkness player to add another piece, some provide benefits to the finder, and two are required for the Valiants to win. On a turn, a player rolls 2 dice and can move using either one, the total, or the difference. For 2-7 players.

Everyone on this site is raving about the game, and granted, the components are very nice looking. But people, really... The story is about locking "dark lightning" behind some walls so that it can't threaten a nation ruled by a chair?! But the chair can only rule when it is with the scepter, so of course the noble knights hide this, and then the darkness threatens some more, and it's time for a quest to reunite the chair and the scepter. This story makes my head hurt. Read The Hobbit to your child instead.

The game claims to be revolutionary, but I don't think the designers invented "roll and move" and I remember a similar search-for-the-secret-treasure-game when I played CIA as a kid in the 1970s. The box says made in the USA, yet one of the plastic bags inside the box is clearly labeled "made in China." Maybe what they meant to say was "put into boxes in the USA". I am quite unimpressed with this game, and unlike the reviews I've read here, everyone I've discussed the game with has said it is only so-so.

Darkness Falls on Sevinpold is not unplayable, and it is not the worst game ever, as the positive reviews attest. Given an imaginitive child and a love of fantasy, I can see how families could have fun with this. But they could also have fun playing with sticks and mud. Please, do yourself a favor and buy a game like Ticket to Ride by Days of Wonder, or Reiner Knizia's cooperative game, Lord of the Rings. Game design has leaped forward in recent years, and Monopoly isn't the standard anymore. Simply put, there are much better games available, for both kids and adults.

Great family game
Review date: 2006-01-02 Rating: 10 out of 10

This is a GREAT game for the entire family. We have 4 children and every single one of them enjoys playing it. My 5 year old is still learning the ins and outs, but he enjoys playing it nevertheless. I like the fact that the game never really "repeats" itself; in other words, every time you play it is a different game because of the way you mix up the cards. The game also requires strategic thinking, and I love to see that develop in my children (while they are having fun!). They also get a good opportunity to interact and be social with each other while they are playing. This game can't be found in many toy stores (though I'm sure that will come with time) so I am really glad that we can purchase this game on Amazon.com. We have given it as a gift, the last time to my 50-year old brother-in-law. Definitely can't go wrong with this game!

Sevinpold is fantastic for families and a great video game alternative
Review date: 2005-12-20 Rating: 10 out of 10

I have played this game multiple times as an adult and have always found it enjoyable. Every time I play I learn something new about strategy because it has greater depth than most board games and infinite possibilities. You never know how the game ends until the last roll of the dice, which I often found out the hard way. I like to be the Darkness because being the 'bad guy' is always more fun. I recommend this game to boys ages 8-12 and to families that want a wholesome alternative to video games. Sevinpold is entertaining and highly suspenseful. Best of all, it fosters social interaction, team work and strategic thinking. I wish I had this game when I was a kid!
