In Wise and Otherwise there are 2,500 wise, funny and unusual old sayings from around the world, and more than a few possible endings! During play the first part of an actual but little known old saying is read aloud. Then, with a little wit and imagination each player writes an ending to go with the beginning. The made-up sayings are read aloud along with the actual old sayings, and everyone tries to guess the real one. You'll get points when other players think your ending is the real one, and points for guessing the real old saying. Voted a Best Party Game of the Year by Games magazine, Wise and Otherwise belongs next to Pictionary and Scrabble in your arsenal of fun. This creative, interactive game (read: everybody shouting, flailing, laughing) revolves around 500 cards, each emblazoned with five obscure and long-forgotten sayings from around the world. For example, one old Chinese saying is, "Don't add salt to a boatload of salt fish." One side of the card states, "Don't add salt to..." and it is the job of the players to devise probable endings. "Don't add salt to salty soup," for example. Or, "Don't add salt to the open wound." (The actual endings are listed on the flip sides of the cards.) A player wins points when other players vote for his or her special ending, or when the player guesses the actual ending, so the goal is to finish the proverb as convincingly as possible given the geographic region in question. Each elegant box contains one game board, 500 cards, six writing pads, six pencils, one die, and six player pawns. People who love language, oddly hilarious translations, offbeat proverbs, or just making people look foolish by guessing their very clever answers will adore this game. Wise and Otherwise is the best group game on the market. Only the original Trivial Pursuit come close to its delightfulness . Like the family classic , "Fictionary " , the game played in American homes for decades using only a home dictionary and paper and pencils, it is an adult game with endless challenges in thinking, writing, and ...making people laugh . Unlike Fictionary, there is no need to pour through the dictionary searching for obscure words " that no one has ever heard of ". The words are provided on cards, with the correct defitnition. The players write their invented definitions on paper and submit them to the cardholder. Then everyone votes on the one they think is the real answer. Everyone whose definition gets a vote gets a point, and if you guessed the real answer, you get two. This game is superb , and even just two determined people can play- submitting two or three definitions on their turn as cardholder. Five stars for this fabulous and totally NOT TRIVIAL game for grown-ups.

Don't buy this game from Amazon! It is listed at $134.00. It ranges from $30 to $50 everywhere else on the web. Don't say I never saved you a couple bucks, or $90ish.

A fun game ideal for bringing people together

I wouldn't recommend this game for children under about 9-10, but it's absolutely ideal for bringing together groups of people who don't know each other. The cards contain the beginning of wise saying from around the world, like: "Wisdom isn't in the head, ...". The players then have to think up endings for the saying (like, say, "it's in the beer"), and afterwards try to guess which of the suggestions is the correct one. I thoroughly recommend it, and my 16-year-old son has just requested it for his birthday.

I have never played the game but it was a birthday gift for my 29 year old brother who L-O-V-E-D it! Shipping was on time and product was great!
